118-Emily from My Chubby Confessions!!!

Emily’s tip for portion control is, “I normally use Ziploc baggies for portion control. They get kind of expensive and it’s wasteful, but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do, right? If I’m in a hurry I just use measuring cups though. Sometimes I eyeball it!”

Great tips! Congrats Emily! Please e-mail me your address when you have a chance!

The most popular portion control tip was measuring food out into Ziploc bags. I will share a few other helpful tips too!

  • Use smaller bowls and spoons so you will take smaller bites and eat less.
  • Use a digital kitchen scale.
  • Measure out your portion on a plate and immediately put the bag away.
  • Do not eat snacks out of the bag!
  • Ask someone to take the snacks away from you! (I do this all of the time).
  • Ask for a container right away when you are out to eat and immediately put half of your meal away to take home.
  • When you start to get full, put a napkin over your plate so you stop eating.
  • Eat one portion and wait 15 minutes to see if you are still hungry.
  • Eat with your non-dominant hand.
  • Not do buy in bulk.
  • Use baby food plastic containers. Thanks for all the wonderful tips!

Blogger Meetup!

Yesterday during my lunch hour, I met Ellen and Jacelyn at Sea Thai Bistro. Marina was supposed to come as well but she felt sick. You were missed Marina! It was so nice that the girls met me at a place 2 minutes from my work! It was a great break from my boring day.

I discovered that Sea had awesome lunch specials when I read the menu! Every entree came with a free appetizer! I got the Roasted Tofu With Salad- mixed green bean sprout, onion, peanut dressing, taro chip caesar salad romaine crispy five spice crouton miso dressing.

The salad was delicious! I probably did not even need an entree after that! The peanut dressing
was amazing.

Main Course:

Steamed Mix-selected vegetable, tofu, brown rice, pepper sauce.

There was no tofu in there like the menu said but I did not mind because I was already full from the appetizer! I really enjoyed the vegetables. They were pretty similar to the steamed vegetables I get from Chinese restaurants. All of that food was only $9.00. I would definitely eat there again!

I was pretty snacky later in the afternoon. I had a banana with nut butter and some granola from my desk. I had a Z-Bar at some point too. It was probably because I went to the gym before work for an hour. I’m always starving all day when I work out in the morning!

After work I met the roomie at Anna’s Place, our new little neighborhood bar in Queens. We watched the Yankees game, had a few beers (5)…and ate some dinner!

I was not too hungry since I snacked all afternoon but I got a nice big salad anyway. It was the Vegetarian Salad: salad with grilled mushrooms, onions, string beans and peppers.

With a beer and some of her fries of course. The salad was delicious!

Help Missy Win a Vacation!!

My friend Sherri over at Single Edition is hosting a contest to win a one week vacation to Grenada!! I realllly want to win but I need your help! Every day for the next 21 days, she will be posting a question on the message boards. I will be posting the question every day on the blog and am asking for your comments and feedback. Your involvement will increase my chances of winning so any responses would be greatly appreciated!!

Today’s Question:

Gift For New Single Mom By Choice

Several weeks ago a friend of mine delivered twins very early on in her pregnancy. She is a single mom by choice who I imagine can use some support during this period. Despite my attempts to reach out to her via phone and email, I have not received any updates on the status of the newborns. I would like to send a gift but something that will be helpful and practical rather than just a fun toy or cute outfit for the kids. I could really use some creative/thoughtful suggestions…

Thanks everyone!!! Gift suggestions would make me a happy girl! Have a great weekend!

P.S. I have something very exciting happening tomorrow!!! I was going to keep it a surprise but it has to do with a photo shoot for a popular magazine!! Ahh!

I would suggest sending her a basket filled with bottles, onesies, pacifiers, etc. Since she has two little ones; I am sure all of these things will come in handy.

My sister is a single mom and she is really busy, so don't take it personal if you don't hear from your friend for a few days or even week. She must be so overwhelmed.

That Salad from Anna's looks so delish!

and yums at the Peanut Dressing.

    Congrats Emily!

Yea for blogger meetups! All the food looks yummy.

My advice for the new mom would be to drop a basket full of diapers and coupons for baby formula or food. Offer to stay awhile and do the dishes or vacuum. Little things mean a lot to new moms.

This may be way too practical, but I like to give saving bonds to new parents so they can start a savings account for their children to save for college/adulthood.Plus, they double over time.

Another good gift is a book to start their library. My personal favorite is The Giving Tree. I still cry everytime I read it. Hope this helps!

What a fun contest!! My idea would be diapers. They are $$$, especially times two! A cute idea is something like this that my friend had at a shower recently:

    http://www.aboutus.org/DiaperCakewalk.com

Takes time, but it's sure cute!

Can't WAIT to hear about the photoshoot!!

Was so good to finally meet you! I had a great time, though not sure if I'll get to see you again before I leave :/

Hmm…the question. Babies get a LOT of gifts when they are born so I would guess that they don't 'need' anything- I would get something for the mom who is probably burned out and exhausted. Maybe make a few homecooked meals that can be frozen to save her time or some nice bath things?

    Hey Missy,

I think it would be a great idea for your friend to send a care basket. It could be full of useful things that people run out and can be pricey, things like wipes, formula, etc etc. And maybe a few small things for the mom, easy to prepare emails. I dunno!!

I can imagine with two babies – anything would come in handy – but I definitely second the onesies suggestion – those are always helpful, or burp clothes, blankets, or maybe, if the person is not opposed – a gift card to a baby store like baby's r us or carter so they can pick out something they really need.

Also, diapers, dinners, anything to make it easy on mom!

I am aure that mom is busy and tired right now! I think some good homecooked meals would be wonderful for her. Freeze a few cassseroles so she can pull something out when she doesn't have time to cook. Or take her dinner and watch the babies while she eats (babies always seem to need something when you are about to sit down to a hot meal). I'm sure she could use any help she can get right now but might not want to ask for it…

I love to give Diaper Cakes for new baby gifts. They look like a big cake, but as you probably guessed, they are made of diapers. It is also nice to attach baby accessories such as bottles, rattles and any other items to the completed cake.

What about a gift card tree…you take one of those clippy photo holders and fill it with gift cards for target, walgreens, BabyGap, whatever stores in your area a new mom is going to need to frequent
