I could not decide what to blog about today. It was between……
OR………………….
Since you guys have seen 5 Burro Cafe margaritas, Veggie Mexican salads, and Lite Choice soft serve probably 50 times on my blog, I decided to go with the green juice! Before I move onto the healthy things, I must thank Mari for having margaritas with me last night after seeing how stressed I was! Life saver! I also want to thank Stephanie at Lite Choice for making my Oreo’s N Cream 100 times better than the other evil lady on Sunday! Okay, I feel like I am at an awards ceremony. Enough of that….
Green Juice
Yesterday I decided to make use of my juicer! I have this baby:
I was juicing almost every morning since the end of last summer but just kind of stopped a few months ago! Hmm…why you might ask?
1) Cost: Buying organic fruits and veggies every single week got very pricey!
2) Weather: Drinking the juice made me cold. All I wanted in the winter was a warm cup of coffee!
3) Time Commitment: I decided I did not feel like waking up an extra 20 minutes early to juice! Silly…I know.
4) Cleaning: It is really not as tedious as people make it seem but it is still not fun scraping juice pulp out of the filter at 7:00 in the morning!
5) Taste: I was juicing so much that I really got disgusted when thinking about the flavor!
6) Noise: My roommate wakes up an hour later than me. I felt really bad every time I turned it on high speed!
7) Hunger: Some people can go until lunch just drinking juice. The juice was actually making me more hungry. I hated feeling like I was eating/drinking 2 breakfasts.
This seems like a lot of negatives but I really felt the need to try it again. Why? I think my body could really use it. I seem to get sick..a lot. I could not get out of bed on Monday. I feel like crap again today. I felt like I was sick at least once a month this past winter. I also hate to see my juicer just sitting on my counter collecting dust. I can deal with waking up early now that the weather is getting warmer. As far as taste goes, I will not be making the same juice as last year. I made carrot, celery, ginger, cucumber, apple, lime, and kale juice every morning. Too many ingredients. Yesterday morning I tried:
Cucumber, apple, ginger, kale, and celery. I used too much ginger. It was okay but I think I will omit it or use less next time. I don’t want to get grossed out right away!
I think I really decided to start juicing again after my last school weekend. David Wolfe, raw foodist and author of SuperFoods spoke to us.
He was probably one of my favorite speakers so far. I can’t even describe the energy he had. He discussed the importance of eating raw food and how cooking certain foods destroys B vitamins in the body since they are water soluble. He went through a bunch of different foods and discussed their benefits and whether they were acidic or alkaline. He said juice is living water which is why it gives people so much energy. He said celery is great to juice with since it is highly alkaline and not glycemic like carrots. He said celery balances out nut butters which are not alkaline. He made a crazy superfoods smoothie with about 10 different ingredients. He included everything from maca powder to reishi mushroom powder. I am currently on a search for all of the ingredients! I really want to make this smoothie! Once I find everything, I will write another post with the ingredients and their benefits.
Yesterday morning, I still got starving after drinking my juice. I had a 2nd breakfast. I don’t really care about organic juice calories though since it is so good for me. I would love to juice or eat raw till lunch but it will never happen. I tend to feel a lot better on a high protein breakfast. I think the superfoods smoothie will fill me up much better than juice so I am excited to make it. As far as cost goes, the organic veggies are worth it if it will prevent me from getting sick so often! There is also a health food store right by work that makes organic juice in case I am ever feeling to lazy to clean. We’ll see. This morning I already slept too late to make juice again. I will at least try to make it a few days a week! Better than nothing right?
Are you a juice or smoothie person?
What is your favorite juice/smoothie combination?

You shouldn’t care about the calories since it’s not more than like 100! Carrots and ginger are the best combination!

I think it sounds very beneficial and you should do it if it makes you feel good. I’ve started drinking a whey protein drink once per day this week and it gives me so much energy! Who cares about the calories? They’re good calories, not calories from junk you know?
Have a fun weekend!

I’ve toyed with the idea of juicing for a while, but this makes me rethink not doing it. Hmmm. I think I may even check out this book! Thanks!

I love a good smoothie but never really got into the juices. Probably because i never found a juice that kept me full long enough. I would get back into it given the right formula…

My first juice experience included ginger + it was awful!

I’m definitely a smoothie person. Juice isn’t my thing at all…I can totally see the downside of juicing and personally i don’t own a juicer.

I don’t like juice (it hurts my stomach really bad for some reason!) but I like smoothies….Mango/lime/jalapeno is my favorite. I find that smoothies (using protein powder) are an easy way to get protein in when you’re heavy into training for something.
However, those fake juices/smoothies at cafes are just sugar bombs! Nothing good about those.

I used to love love love juice but I stopped drinking it because of the sugar content. Does juicing this way help that or is it really just the same as buying juice with no sugar added?

I love smoothies! I like peaches and cherries in my smoothies

I think the main reason I’ve stuck to smoothies is I wasn’t sure juice would fill me up

The juice sounds really good and helpful — I bet all the vitamins do give your immune system a nice boost! I don’t have a juicer but would like to try some from a healthy food store or something this summer. I do, however, have a blender, and I’m obsessed! I like soy milk, vanilla protein powder, spinach, frozen berries, and nut butter. Simple, nutritious and tasty!
Have a good weekend Missy!

I went through a pretty serious juice phase to deal with some kidney stuff awhile back, and while I’m not as habitual about it these days, I still love me some beet, apple, ginger, wheatgrass and sparkling water splendor.
Juice, smoothies or margaritas, though? Definitely the latter. Extra salt.

haha, I hate to hear about the alkaline and acidc “diet” that people tout. There is simply no science to back it up. Ugh. I like to stick with “everything in moderation”. Either way, I’d like to check out his book, I’ve heard a lot of other good things about it, for sure. AND, I WANT that juicer!! My gosh, it’s amazing! I would throw everything in there, but the kitchen sink

I’m sooo afraid to try green juice! haha I love fruit smoothies and fruit juice, but I’m not into drinking veggies!

Yeah, I TOTALLY hear you on all those negatives regarding juicing. I think all of that has crossed my mind too. But I dunno, somewhere down the line it just became a habit for me so I don’t even think about whether to do it or not each (weekday) morning anymore. I definitely look forward to it, and I have the process down to less than 10 minutes total, including cleanup, so I promise you it can be quick!

After the drinking of water, juice recipes for weight loss have to be one of the most natural and best ways to stay healthy as you lose weight. Forget about the fad diets, the celebrity endorsed virtual starvation weight loss programs, adding natural healthy juices to your daily eating plan is streets ahead. The first thing you’re going to have to do is to invest in a juicer – and I say invest because that is exactly what it will be for you and your body.

I just got that exact same juicer for graduation! I tried it out this weekend, and I loved it! It really isn’t too messy!
I had celery, cucumber, half a lemon, green apple, carrot, and parsley in my juice. It was pretty good!

I am not a smoothie person at all and I never really drank juice because I felt it was a waste of calories. They add a lot of sugar to packaged juice. But then I discovered fresh juice and I am hooked!!!! I don’t have my own juicer but there is this place where I live that makes it right in front of you! It is amazing and it has a different consistency than store bought juice.
I like sticking to juice with fruit in it. My favorite combination right now is orange and strawberry.

It sounds like you’re creating problems yourself by trying to solve this issue instead of looking at why their problem in the first place.

I was just searching for this info for a while. After 6 hours of continuous Googleing, finally I got it in your site. I wonder what is the lack of Google strategy that don’t rank this type of informative websites in top of the list. Normally the top sites are full of garbage.
