Staying Healthy at Big Events!

Hello! Hope everyone had a nice weekend! The hot weather made me happy! My weekend consisted of a Bat Mitzvah, drinking at night, and relaxing. Sounds good to me! Let’s talk about how to make some healthy choices at an event like a Bat Mitzvah with many unhealthy, tempting options all day!

That morning I went to the gym and did 45 minutes on the elliptical. It is always a good idea to get a nice workout in if you think you want to indulge at the event. I think it is totally fine to have a few treats at events like this since you most likely don’t get to eat this stuff every day. I also knew there was an open bar so I tried to go for the healthier options during the event! Always have to save room for those drinks!

After the service, there was tons of cookies, brownies, and fruit. I was starving for lunch by this time so I did not want to fill up on too many cookies. Instead I opted for fruit, coffee, and a piece of the chocolate below.

The chocolate tasted like Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies! Amazing!

Once it was time to eat I ran over to the salad bar first and filled my plate! Strawberries are amazing during this time of year! I love summer.

Eventually I made my way to the open bar. I started with a glass of wine. No, that is not ice cream next to my wine. It is mashed potatoes! So pretty. They also had bacon, cheese, sour cream, etc. to top over the potatoes but I skipped all of that.

I also had a piece of chicken stuffed with spinach. I had a small piece of steak as well for some extra protein but don’t know what happened to that picture!

There was also a pasta bar, pizza, chicken fingers, and ravioli. I was still a little hungry so I opted for another salad with some fries on the side.

I had a Blue Moon as well! (Or maybe 3 of them).

They had a “make your own sundae” bar for dessert. I was stuffed from 3 Blue Moons so I skipped dessert. Sometimes alcohol is my top priority! :)

I took the train back to New York just in time to meet some friends from college! They were all visiting from Maryland. I hadn’t seen a few of them in 3 years so it was an amazing time!We met at a Tapas restaurant in the Village called Sala. I had a few glasses of Sangria, a salad, and shrimp dish. It was really nice there!

We continued on to a few more bars. Dori joined us for the festivities! We enjoyed some $14.00 (crazy) pear and mango martinis at a beautiful rooftop bar! I had to warn all of my Maryland friends that drinks would not be $3.00 like they were used to! Gotta love New York!

Dori and I ended the night with omelets at a diner at 2:00 in the morning! I am thankful for Twitter  because it helped Dori and I remember the events that occurred that night!! See @dysterious’ timeline if you are interested. It will give you a nice laugh.

Sunday was a lazy day. I went to Piu Bello for a nice greasy lunch to cure the hangover.

blog 8 063

I got the Vegetarian wrap with avocado, goat cheese, and olives. I kind of forgot there were olives in there and had to pick them out! They are my least favorite food. Other than that the wrap and fries were both amazing! It felt great to sit outside in the 80 degree weather! I consider moving to Florida more and more every day.

Piu Bello is known for their gelato so I got Cookies N’ Cream!

I got home and spent the rest of the day checking out computer desks at Simplydesks.com. I will be doing a review of an item from the website very soon! I can’t decide between a new office chair or little portable laptop desk! We’ll see.

Great weekend! The Bat Mitzvah made me miss my own 10 years ago! I gave out really cool boxers that said, “I had a Sunsational  time at Missy’s Bat Mitzvah! I’ve always been obsessed with tropical hot weather! One of these days I will get some pictures on here from that day. I had thick bangs and braces. Typical.

  • girl looks like we both got tore up over the weekend… only i was bed ridden with a bad case of dehydration and “cant keep anything down -itis.” it was a miserable sunday… and sort of starting to feel better now!
My tip for being healthy is to know before hand what will be offered so u can plan ahead. Also if you are the slightest bit dehydrated- alcohol should not be consumed!

I rocked big bangs and side pony tails…. and neon pants. ah the 80s

  • When I’m at a big event I always do one loop around the place before I start eating. I see what is being offered and make my choices based on what I really want to eat.

  • Oh- another thing I try to do but it doesn’t always happen is to drink water between cocktails.

  • Ahhh that looks like an amazing weekend, from the pre-emptive workout to the party eats to the post-hangover lunch! I love it! You and Dori are both so pretty!

Florida weather is amazing, but I’m told I’ll have trouble this first summer. There’ve been a few super hot and humid days already and I’m like, what am I going to do in August?!

  • THANK YOU! This is moderation people. Indulging in the things you want, having tastes of everything, not starving yourself so you can gorge at a party.
Thank you for being such a positive influence Missy! You’re amazing :)

  • I try to fill up on nutritious things, but try a taste of everything not so healthy that I may want to try. So, I will fill my plate with salad or fruit and then incorporate a bit of mac n cheese, meatballs, or whatever else.

  • Pick fruits and veggies at events. My 80′s hair style would be the ”pony tail pulled to the side”, haven’t rocked that since last yr. (And only for 80′s night at this club I go too.) lol

That wrap is like my dream sandwich. I want.

  • whenever i know I am going to an event i NEVER go hungry! I usually eat something before, so I know I wont be tempted by some of the food there!! I also fill up on lots of raw veggies (usually there with some sort of dip!) looks lik eyou had a blast! that spinach stuffed chicken looks aawesome!

  • Good tips! It’s important to decide what is “worth it” and what isn’t. I’m with you on the drinking LOL. Usually I decide whether I’m going to drink or indulge in the unhealthy foods. If I drink I’m like you and eat salad but do have a few treats as well.

That veggie wrap looks so good. Seriously I want to eat the screen. I don’t know if its your picture or it really was amazing but it just looks so fresh and tasty!

  • Wow that selection of food looks GREAT! NOT splurging at big events is one of my biggest problems but like you I tried to load up on the fruits and veggies first, but of course let myself sample some of the heavy stuff too!

  • WOW – such wonderful pics, Missy!
Looks like you´ve had quite a weekend :)
    Delicious eats!
Loved that veggie wrap – how can you not love olives? I LOVE IT! Hahaha.
    Have a terrific week, love!

  • I don’t really have a tip. I guess because I’m such a picky eater that I basically just eat whatever looks good at events! :)

  • I’m always jealous of your weekend recaps- you always have such awesome food and delicious drinks!! Props to you for passing up the ice cream bar, once I have a few drinks it’s game over as far as moderation goes!

I’ve found that sticking to crudites pre-meal really helps me at big events! There’s always tons of appetizers floating around, but if I stick to veggies I know I’ll really enjoy my meal.

Hope you have a great week!! xoxo

  • Love Blue Moon! And when I go to an event I try to have something small beforehand so I’m not starving. It (usually) works!

    [Reply]

  • haha, I have to agree with you that sometimes alcohol beats dessert! I do that all the time. i order a couple beers instead of dessert and bread (although I can’t eat bread anyway…boo). I’m also sure to eat something before I go to an event like this, or at least I try not to go really hungry. Because that spells disaster!! Glad you had a nice weekend :)

    [Reply]

  • Gosh, I’ll be honest – events are my weakness! Ever since I was a kid I equate events with overeating. It’s a bad habit :/

With that being said, my best way to avoid it is to stay busy socializing! And, since I’m a talker, that usually isn’t too hard :P Looks like you had a great time!!

    [Reply]

  • OMG I’ve been to Sala and I sat at that exact same table! LOL I hope you got the bacon wrapped dates–those were amazing.

Alcohol over dessert? I do not understand that preference. ;)

    [Reply]

  • achh i hate black olives! i always pick them out of greek salads/pizza or wherever else they may lurk lol.

    1) What are your tips for eating healthy at a big event?
Veggies, veggies, veggies! And whatever lean proteins and complex carbs are around. Then dessert I usually go for some fruit and one treat (cake, cobbler) that I really want to try. Or if there are a few, I take a little taste of everything.

    2) What was your 80’s hair style?
Hmmm I was a youngin in the 80′s and I grew my hair down my back! So I was rockin’ the ‘hippy’ look I guess.

  • i always choose computer desks which are colored white because it looks very classy and very net,”‘
