Middle of the Night Eating Strikes Again

Happy Thursday! I am on my 2nd cup of Tazo Awake Black tea because it was one of those awful nights of sleep.

If you have been reading my blog for a while now, you would know that I used to wake up almost every night and would need a snack in order to fall back asleep. I also had to take melatonin each night to fall asleep in the first place. I had nights where I went overboard with food because I was half asleep when I was eating. I would eat foods that are proven to help people sleep like peanut butter, turkey, bananas, etc. Sometimes I would have a Z-bar, but many nights it turned into more than one. I woke up feeling gross from all of the unnecessary calories consumed but I could not sleep without it. I would try not think about food but always ended up obsessing until I had a snack.

One night at 4 am while dipping turkey into peanut butter (it is a great combo if you’ve never tried it), a mouse ran by my foot. I dropped everything, started screaming and crying, and could not breathe. I have a HUGE phobia of mice. After that incident, I gradually stopped going in to the kitchen in the middle of the night. I would still wake up but would just have a bar that I kept in my closet.

Currently, I have been falling and staying asleep much butter. By 11:00 every night, I am ready to pass out. I may wake up once or twice to pee, but I rarely need a snack. It could be because I did not have a real bed in my old apartment. I was sleeping on an awful sofa bed with metal things digging into my back.  Maybe it was all in my head in the past that I needed food to fall back asleep. Who knows?

Last night was an exception! I did fall asleep right away at 11:00 which is always nice. At 3:45, I woke up and could not fall back asleep after. I felt truly hungry so I grabbed a Luna Cookie from the kitchen. I still run in and out as fast as possible in the middle of the night because I am terrified of seeing a mouse in the new apartment. None yet (knock on wood!!!).

I got back in bed and still could not sleep. I felt a little hungry still, maybe from an intense spin class a few hours before? Maybe because it is that time of month?  Whatever the reason, I went back into the kitchen and decided to have a bowl of cereal.Cereal was always one of those things that led me to overeat. One bowl would turn into 4 bowls so I completely stopped buying it. I made my roommate hide her cereal in her room. Lately I have been eating cereal on weekends since I have those huge tubs of MyWayCereal. I have been fine with having just 1 or 2 bowls. Last night I was full after the first bowl of cereal but had another one anyway.

My brain does not function properly when I am tired at 4 am. I had another big bowl after that but did not feel like seeing another picture of it today. I finally fell back asleep at 5 am feeling stuffed and annoyed with myself.

I am trying not to stress about it too much today. I will just have to do some extra cardio later or something!

I still made my Pomegranate Mango Amazing Meal this morning to sip on once I got to work.

I added a banana and Almond Breeze.

It turned out delicious! It was extra thick today. It tasted similar to the other flavors but had a slightly fruity taste. It could be my favorite! I’d probably buy all 3 flavors and switch it up every morning!I’ve already eaten some other breakfast too but I will talk about that tomorrow! Back to yesterday’s breakfast for now….

I had the Amazing Meal smoothie with 1 packet of oats and a banana. This breakfast was perfect at keeping me full till lunch time.

Lunch was some good old Pb & J. I used P.B. Loco CocoaBanana Peanut Butter and Crofter’s Organic Jam.

I will be doing a review on the jam next week since they sent me 4 amazing flavors so stay tuned!

I had the usual Miguel’s chips on the side. They are never ending!

I had a delicious sample for dessert. The cafe upstairs has new smoothies so they were giving out samples to everyone. I got a Mocha smoothie sample.

Very good!

After work I went to the gym and just barely made it to spin. My train ride took an hour and 20 minutes instead of 45 minutes! There was a fire on the track so we all had to leave the train. Fun fun. It was another substitute but he was a good one. I got a great workout!

For dinner I made a similar salad to 2 nights ago.

Salad with cucumbers, carrots, Lightlife Chicken Strips, Mary’s Gone Crackers, and Sabra for dipping!

Oh yeah, and some edamame on the side.

Delicious!
And the usual for dessert..I am hooked.
I may have convinced the boy to split another one with me. Oops. Better than a whole one though!
I am off to lunch now! I should probably get back into the gym lunch thing but we’ll see. I enjoy hot weather a little too much!
Bye bye!

It was just a fluke, don't stress. You have been doing so well and you will not be waking up again to eat! Remind yourself of that.

I want to go to spin in the city with you one day.

Awh, I have no self-control when it comes to cereal. It becomes 4 bowls easily so I don't even keep it in my house. It's so sad not to have it, but it's better in the end

But I use to have the same problem, waking up in the middle of the night to eat. I ended up have to retrain my stomach that it wouldn't get food at night. It was tough at first, but a week into it, my stomach finally learned.

hey Missy, I know you struggled with the midnight munchies but it might be your body trying to tell you something.
Your salad while it looks delicious might have lacked some protein and perhaps your middle of the night snacking is your body trying to satisfy its need for something lacking.
I use a website to track my fat, protein, carb and caloric intake and i noticed i was eating more carbs than protein. check it out – http://www.sparkpeople.com

Dori: Yes let's go to spin!

Elise: He works in Philly and had to be there by 8:30 today! He will only be doing the crazy commute like once a week after today though. I will gladly have your Amazing Meal packets :)

Mo Diva: Thanks for the advice. I did have protein in the Light Life strips plus a lot more hummus than you see there. I was stuffed after dinner so who knows. I am a member of Sparkpeople but I have no patience to track all of my calories and fat! They have great daily newsletters though!

I have the same problem with cereal, which is too bad since I love it so much. I think your weekend only idea is a good plan, maybe I will try that. If I have cereal in the house, I often want it for EVERY meal.

On another note, I have been looking for luna cookies for months to no avail! jealous!

    Hey Missy,

I don't comment very often, but thought I would for this post!

I don't have an issue with nighttime eating, but I do with binges. I have unfortunately found that I need to keep anything too tempting out of the house, and just have it as a treat (like ice cream, we will just go out for ice cream if I really want it). As for cereal, I keep a kind that I don't LOVE but that is great for crunch with yogurt or oatmeal, like Fiber One. I don't get the urge to eat and eat it that way.

Just remember how far you have come and that you shouldn't need food to get you through the night. Maybe you could make a milk/amazing grass shake and keep it in the fridge, take a few gulps if you wake up in the middle of the night .. that should fill you up? Keep up the good work, girl.

I remember you used to talk about that a lot, but you haven't done it awhile so that's definitely progress! I do it from time to time, too, and can almost always attribute it to stress or that time of the month. OR I just have cookies in my pantry that I can't stop thinking about. LOL.

I have zero control with cereal!! The only kind I get are Fiber One or Puffins, since they have so much damn fiber there is no way in hell I could eat a lot without some tummy issues!

I'm sorry about your difficult night last night, Missy – but it sounds like you've been making major progress with your nighttime eating and a few setbacks are to be expected — don't let it get you down, girl! we all have our moments!

Hi–I think this is the first time I am commenting on your blog–but I love it!
Try not to worry about eating "more than you should"…we all have our weaknesses. Cereal is one of mine too. However, you inspire me every day with your dedication and motivation to live out a healthy lifestyle. You rock, girl!

Missy – Don't beat yourself up over this!! We all have our ups and downs. You are right, and you are working out a lot lately with all those classes! My only piece of advice would be maybe drinking a big glass of water before bed, but then again, then you might be up all night peeing! Maybe try it out and see. :)

I agree with other commenters. It was probably just random that you woke up this one time. You'll be back on track in no time!

    Have a beautiful Friday!

    Hey Missy,

I've been reading your blog for a little while but have never commented before. I really just wanted to say that I admire your positive outlook/attitude after your little slip up with the night eating. I have been working on my problems with binge eating for a while now and I know that the hardest thing is not to beat yourself up afterwards because that neverr helps. It helps me when I read a post like this to see that we all have slip ups every now and then and its totally ok, we can move on, and like you said do a little extra exercise the next day to take it off our minds! And you eat so healthfully and seem to follow your hunger cues so well, this little incident was just prob just a fluke.

Thanks for all of your fun posts/reviews and good attitude, I really enjoy reading your blog.
