Heart Rate Monitor Issues and a Flanigan Farms Review!

Lunch

I was very tempted to just sit outside in the sun at lunch but at the last minute I found myself strolling into the air conditioned gym. It is a hot one out there! I did 32 minutes on the elliptical.

I would tell you my stats but Mr. Polar has been acting up lately. I got the Polar F7 heart rate monitor about 3 months ago after reading several good reviews. It seemed to work fine in the beginning but not lately!

It either does not pick up my heart rate and tells me that it is 0, or all of the sudden tells me it is 230! Sometimes it tells me my heart rate is 60! I don’t understand. I reset it a few weeks ago and it still does not register correctly for a full workout. My calories burned always seem to be way lower at the end of a 45 minute class than they should be.

I know Dori has been having issues with hers too. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? I do everything that the instructions recommend like washing it off after every workout but it still never seems to work right.

I believe it is under warranty so I may send it back. I am very tempted to get a nicer one that does not involve a strap and also tracks distance. I plan to attempt running outside so it would be helpful to know how many miles I ran! It would be a shame to waste all that money on the Polar since it was supposed to be a good heart rate monitor! Oh technology…

I got back to my desk and had a repeat of dinner last night.

  • Boar’s Head Low Salt Turkey
  • Boar’s Head Low Salt Ham
  • Alpine Lace White American Cheese
  • Cedar’s Hummus
  • Mustard
  • Lettuce
  • Cues
  • Whole Wheat Wrap

With some Cape Cod Honey Dijon chips on the side. You might be seeing these for the next few days because my bf and roommate both don’t like this flavor so I am trying to use up the bag myself.

My afternoon snack was a Flanigan Farms Nuts ‘N’ Fruit bag.

I received this nice little package last night filled with some nut mixes, stickers, a folder and a pencil from Flanigan Farms!

I discovered Flanigan Farms while reading my daily Hungry Girl newsletter here. I checked out the company’s website and was very interested in all of their products.

All Flanigan Farms products are:

  • all natural
  • unsalted
  • contain the ‘good fat’ (mono and poly-unsaturated)
  • contain no added oils, sugars or preservatives
  • have no cholesterol because there is no animal fat
  • produced in small batches and code dated to ensure freshness
  • cheaper than before: they just lowered prices despite the economy!

They have an entire line of snacking as well as baking products. They also have a school fundraising program that promotes healthy eating for kids.

Today I brought the Nuts ‘N’ Fruit pack. The mix includes California Almonds, Raisins, Dates (dusted with rice flour to separate), Cashews, Sunflower Seeds, Pepitas (pumpkin seeds), & Dried Organic Fuyu Persimmons.

I loved this exciting mix of fruits and nuts! I actually tried my first persimmon a few months ago so it was exciting to try it in dried form. Delicious! They actually dry and slice the persimmons right in their facilities. The mix was almond based (no peanuts) and more on the sweet side.

The 1 oz bag contains 130 calories, 8 grams of fat, 12 grams of carbohydrates, and 4 grams of protein. Perfect little afternoon snack!

This product is available in:

i. 5-pack 1.5oz packages (along with a sticket of each Flanigan Farms character!)

ii. 2.5 oz packages

iii. 6 oz packages

iv. 12 oz packages

My package also included a bag of Dry Roasted California Almonds.

This is their newest product so I look forward to trying it either tonight or tomorrow!

*This product is only available in a 5-pack of 1 oz packages.

The next bag was called Nuts ‘N’ Things.

The mix includes: Dry roasted Peanuts, California Raisins, Sunflower Seeds, Almonds and Pepitas (Pumpkin Seeds). They call it “The Fitness Snack” since it contains tons of energy and no sodium. I plan to try this one before the gym one day!

This product is available in:

i. 5-pack 1.5oz packages (along with a sticket of each Flanigan Farms character!)

ii. 3 oz packages

iii. 6 oz packages

iv. 12 oz packages

The final bag was unsalted cashews!

They are completely natural and unsalted. I am a huge fan of cashews so this will not last too long in my house.

* This product only comes in the size (2.5 oz).

I love that all of the bags provide portion control since it is very easy to go overboard with nuts and trail mixes! They are much healthier than any trail mix you would find in a vending machine since they are all natural.

Flanigan Farms products are sold in major retail stores in Southern California but are always available online here!

*Use the promo code “GONUTS” to receive 15% off every time you order!!

    that wrap sounds great.

i don’t have a polar , so I’m not sure, but I hope it starts working or you get a new one soon! That has to be frustrating.

now I wish we had a Baskin Robbins near by :)

Is the strap tight enough? And this is gross, but are the sensors wet? Sometimes if I re-wet and tighten (god this sounds dirty), it helps.

HangryPants: I wet it every time right before I start my workout. I do have it the tightest it goes but I ordered a medium strap by accident so maybe i should try buying a smaller size before sending it back!

    Chris from Polar USA here:)

I’m sorry to hear your having an issue with the strap. I hate to say it, but it sounds like you aren’t washing the strap:) The electrodes are actually built into the fabric , so if they get dirty or any kind of corrosion it causes exactly what you are describing. Following the maintenance as outlined in the manual will make it last a long long time:) This includes regular washing in the washing machine(no dryer)

Also make sure you unsnap the transmitter from the belt whenever you aren’t using it. It will use the battery if you leave it on.

Try this – give it a wash, make sure the snaps are clean also. Try it out. If you are still having an issue, email me @ Customer.service.usa@polar.fi. I will take care of anything. We stand behind our products!

In regard to your comment on getting something without a strap – please don’t. Chest straps are the most accurate and reliable way to measure heart rate. You will end up being completely frustrated with a strapless monitor. If you want something to measure speed/distance. We have the FT and RS products that will give you this information also.

If you choose to go this route – I can give you a trade in discount for a new model. Anything you want.

Let me know how this goes – sorry for the long post:) Nice blog BTW. The wrap made me hungry!

Chris: Thanks so much for the suggestions! I have only washed it in the washer a few times so I will try doing it more. I usually just wash it with soap and water in the sink since I use it almost every day.

I will let you know how it works after! I may also decide on a distance model instead.

    Thanks again!!

The wrap looks incredible! So do the nut and fruit packets!

Hope your polar starts behaving itself. :)

Elise: We haven’t found a new place yet! The exterminator is coming tomorrow so we may wait and see if they can fix our issues. In the mean time, we are still browsing just in case!

do you wet the sensors on the strap before you start working out?? I’m sure you do, but I’ve always done it with my polar and never had any problems.

You should definitely contact the company though if the issues don’t resolve.

Leila: I do wet them before each workout. I think it might be that my strap is not tight enough or I don’t wash it in the washing machine enough. I usually just wash it in the sink. I will see if this works!

  • This is one of the best posts I’ve seen on this subject
