Hey everyone! I am currently sipping on a nice Starbucks coffee while typing. I had one of those insomnia nights from hell. I had plans to wake up at 5:30 in the morning for Core Fusion today. Instead I woke up at 4:00 and could not fall back asleep for the life of me. Once 5:30 hit, I tried to get up and go work out but my head was killing me from tossing and turning. I chugged some water, ate a Z-bar, and fell back asleep till 7:30. So much for a workout today! My coffee and wonderful breakfast are making me feel much better at least.

Mushroom, Broccoli, and American Egg White Omelet on a Whole Grain Wrap from Energy Kitchen!

I can blame my insomnia on myself! Yes..I went to happy hour last night! My friend and I decided to go to Friday’s after work since we knew they had half-priced drinks and appetizers. Yes, I live in New York and continue to go to chain restaurants. There are not many restaurant options in Forest Hills. Okay…there are a few great ones but I would rather not spend $100 bucks every time I go out! I actually had not been to Friday’s in over a year. Last time I was there, I got a Cobb salad and the chicken was rubbery and probably could have bounced off the table. It really freaked me out so I never went back. I decided to give it another chance last night but of course did not order chicken from there. Ew.

I started with a nice half-priced Cosmo!

It was very strong! I had 2 of them.

I got a house salad to start. All of their side salads come as an iceburg wedge of lettuce so I requested romaine instead.

For my main course I went with the SHRIMP KEY WEST:

Two skewers of plump shrimp are dusted with Cajun spices, then fire–grilled and seasoned with a zesty lime splash. We serve the shrimp with steaming broccoli florets for a main course that’s big on flavor!  CALORIES:400 NET CARBS: 12

This was very good! The shrimps had a lot of flavor to them. They were probably the healthiest thing on the menu too. Everything seemed to have 1500 calories there. No thanks. I need those calories for my alcohol.

My 3rd and final drink was a Long Island. Friday’s always has the best Long Islands!

3 drinks=drunk munchies. We split some cheese sticks a little later. I think I had 2. They were delicious.

So yes, I probably should have worked out today! Oh well. I can’t after work either so tomorrow will have to do!

  1. I’ve had terrible insomnia lately too — I don’t know what it is (I’m still blaming daylight savings time!), but I couldn’t get to bed until 3am Sunday night, I’ve been sleeping terribly, and I’m exhausted all the time :( Maybe I need to cut out caffeine completely or something…
I’ve always wanted to go to the Self Workout in the Park, but I ALWAYS have a conflict that day! I forget what it was last year, but this year I’ve got a friend’s wedding and my brother-in-law’s graduation the same day. Maybe someday I’ll be free the first weekend in May! :) I did go to Pilates for Pink (I forget if that was sponsored by Self or Shape) last fall, and that was amazing! Highly recommend it.

Jealous of your Happy Hours deal and drinks. And of that Self Magazine Workout in the Park. I wish Boston Common could accommodate a major event like that.

Ohh well, at least I can watch the marathon in a few weeks!

    Missy-
I highly recommend taking some melatonin right before you go to sleep.
I used to have a really hard time falling asleep and I would always take a tylanol PM. It was great cause it’d really knock me out, but then the next day I was super sluggish.
I love meletonin because it’s a natural herb that PUTS you to sleep, but doesn’t knock you out the way a sleeping pill will. I always feel wonderful the next day. I got mine at Whole Foods, but I’m sure you could find some at Walgreens even.
    Good luck!
I wish I could be there for the workout… next year! I can’t wait to live in the city!!!

I usually do take melatonin! Just ran out the other day :( I will be getting more at lunch today.

Melatonin is actually a hormone, not an herb :) I love it, too! I work for Source Naturals and it’s one of our top selling products.

The Workout in the Park sounds awesome!!! I don’t have trouble once I’m asleep staying asleep, but sometimes it is hard for me to get tired at night. I’ve been taking Melatonin more lately – I LOVE how it makes me naturally tired!

  11. half priced drinks?! you can’t go wrong with those :) I find that chain restaurants are very hit or miss with me. I either LOVE what I order or HATE what I order and like you will be hesistant to go back. I still want to try Unos because of that feta and grilled veggie wrap you get there that looks So good!!

mmm your breakfast would make me feel better too! :)

  12. Drinking can be a huge trigger of insomnia. It can originally make you sleepy, but then you wake up a lot during the night and wake up early in the morning.

I have insomnia problems too. :-( I just try to not get frusterated and think that I will sleep great the next night since I am missing so much sleep on that particular evening.

  14. I don’t sleep well. Two years ago it all started, out of the blue. I limit my alcohol intake, turn the computer off at night, read more with dim lights, and take Melatonin. Sometimes it helps, other times it’s a lost cause.
I wish I lived closer to NYC, so many fun things to do!

  15. I’m sorry you didn’t sleep well :(
I love going to chain restaurants for drinks and apps. I don’t order dinner from them though. I’ve had to many bad experiences. Except Uno’s…I love Unos! The only bad thing about chains is some of them measure their alcohol and the drinks are weak. I’ve been known to yell at a chain bartender, “Fill that bitch up!!!”

  16. When I can’t fall asleep my impatience and frustration kick into high gear, so I quickly take tylenol PM to solve the problem, haha! Hope you are able to get a good night’s rest tonight :)

  17. I’ve never had insonmia, but I definitely wake up at least 3 different times througout the night. I never sleep all the way through! And I definitely have a harder time falling alseep when I drink. Like last night after I had 3 beers :)

I never got drunk insomnia until recently. I don’t deal with insomnia too well in general…I always freak out and keep checking the clock.

I actually have a really serious insomnia problem and am working on dealing with it. I’ve heard meditation/relaxation exercises can help. I think at this point I might just need a prescription though.

I’m planning on going to the workout in the park; it sounds so fun! we should definitely meet up :)

I live in Boston and I go to chains all the time. They are cheap and I can find all their nutrition info online, love it!

Thankfully I can usually fall right back asleep but if I can’t I try for a bit and then just get out of bed and try and do something productive. Working out is usually what helps me sleep the best!!

Self workout in the park sounds fun, wished I lived in NY!

I’ve had insomnia for as long as I can remember, and I have always taken a prescription sleeping pill for it. I’m just weaning off of it now, and trying to let myself fall asleep naturally. I drink organic “peaceful dreams” tea before bed, but I’m not sure if it does anything.

  24. Crystal says:

Usually if I cannot sleep it is because there is too much light in the room or something is on my mind. So I either try to make the room as dark as possible or I get up and write out all my thoughts on a piece of paper. That usually does the trick!
