City Lobster & Steak

Lately I’ve been having major cravings for either lobster or crab. I went to school for 4 years in Maryland where there were a million great seafood restaurants. I find it a little harder to find high quality lobster restaurants here in New York (unless I want to go to a $300 dollar dinner!) Luckily I had a $50.00 gift certificate to Restaurant.com so I did a little search on seafood restaurants. I found a place not too far away from work called City Lobster and Steak. The menu looked perfect and the prices did not seem too steep. The only problem was that Restaurant.com kind of tricked me! They made me buy two $25.00 gift certificates instead of just one $50.00 certificate.  It wasn’t until after I redeemed them that I noticed I could only use one per visit. The coupon also said that we had to order a minimum of 2 entrees in order to get the $25.00 off. If I would have known that, I would have ordered the $25.00 gift certificates for 2 separate restaurants. There is always some kind of catch! Oh well, that just means I’ll have to have lobster again very soon :)

City Lobster made for a wonderful Friday night date spot. I love getting dressed all nice to go to fancy dinners every once in a while! We walked in and saw the live lobsters swimming around. I kind of felt bad. They were cute.

The restaurant was very pretty inside.

We started off with a bottle of Pinot Grigio.

The server gave us one roll each. I liked that better than having an entire bread basket to be tempted by. The bread was warm, soft, and delicious.

I started off with a field greens salad.

I knew I wanted lobster but had no idea which kind or how much to get! The server asked if I wanted 1 pound, 2 pounds, 3 pounds, etc. I took a wild guess and went with 2 pounds. I also had the option of getting them steamed, grilled, or broiled. I went with steamed. I also had 3 more options!…

Angry,
floured & spiced with butter, garlic, basil & crushed red pepper flakes

Pan Roasted,
you select the size, we flambé it with brandy, lobster sauce & fresh herbs

Stuffed,
with jumbo lump crabmeat ( herbs topped with Old Bay Imperial Sauce ad

I never knew lobster would be so difficult to order! Too many choices! I went with the Pan Roasted. I saw brandy in the description and knew it was the perfect choice.

2 pounds was definitely plenty! I don’t think I’ve ever had so much lobster at once! I put on my bib and started working! I definitely needed help breaking my lobster open. The sauce was delicious and the lobster tasted very fresh.  There were so many huge chunks. Loved it! I could barely finish it.

My friend ordered:

10oz Barrel Cut Filet Mignon Certified Angus
with gaufrettes potatoes, grilled asparagus & chimichurri sauce

His entree came out and it was just a small piece of steak on a plate. No sides. Nothing. We were very confused. I found our server and asked if his was supposed to come with asparagus. The server went back and checked. He said they made a mistake and put our order in as:

Surf n’ Turfed,
any size lobster with 6oz barrel cut Filet Mignon

That’s why there were no sides! We explained that he wanted the entree with the potatoes and asparagus so the server eventually brought out the right order. It took another 15 minutes which was kind of disappointing for such a nice restaurant. A small piece of steak with no sides would have never filled him up.

Ahh…that’s better. I tried the steak and it was very good. I think he would have preferred mashed potatoes instead of chips though.

We finished our bottle of wine while waiting for the new steak so we decided to order 2 more drinks for dessert! I had an Appletini and he had a Chocotini.

The Chocotini was probably the best drink EVER! It made the perfect dessert! We got the bill and luckily the server only charged us for the Surf n Turf and not the entire Filet Mignonentree. We were not expecting that so it was nice that the restaurant took responsibility for their mistake. The bill still ended up being pretty high but that is usually the case when there is a ton of alcohol consumed! I would definitely come back to City Lobster since the service ended up being good and the lobster was delicious! Luckily I have no choice but to come back soon since there is $25.00 gift certificate waiting to be redeemed! Stay tuned for another review!

  • I grew up in MD so there are lots of crab places I love. My favorite is a place called Steamers – you can order a mix of foods that is to die for!

  • i Looooove lobster and seafood. :) The 2lbs of lobsters looks like a huge dish but when it comes down to the meat, there’s never enough!!! My favorite restaurants that serve up seafood include Devon (in Chicago), Peach Farm (in Boston), and a ton of sea-side restaurants in Hong Kong. *drool*

P.s. I’m hostin’ a little giveaway for organic preserves and thought it would go PERFECT in your oats! Does strawberry basil jam and blueberry merlot sound good to you? :)

  • Girl if you want seafood you have to go to CITY ISLAND. I am allergic to crab meat but i love me some lobster! My favorite spot is on City Island and is called SAMMYS. Huge restaurant. Fresh caught fish DAILY. Always packed and always delicious!

I went to BBQs with the fam when i was in HIGH SCHOOL. I ordered wild rice instead of fries and there was a STICK in my rice. it was about 2 inches long. big enough to see… and when i showed the manager he was extremly apologetic. I just wanted fresh rice without sticks and he sent over dessert and comped half of the bill. But then again, we were regulars.
Turns out the stick was from the rotisserie chicken. Dont know how it made its way into my rice.

  • sad to say…i am not a lobster fan :( I grew up keeping kosher in my house so all shellfish was off limits, when I was 10 the rules got broken, and my brother and I could eat whatever we watned, but I still never got a liking to lobster! maybe this restaurant would change my opinion!!

I have gone to places where it takes SO long to sit down when I had a reservation, they made up for it by brining up free apps!!

  • This just gave me the worst lobster craving EVER. I need to get to the shore SOON!! One if by Land, Two if by Sea in the West Village is absolutely incredible, if pricey…it makes a really good place for a special occasion!

  • Now I’m hungry! I love crab and lobster and growing up on both coasts (Portland, ME and Seattle, WA) I’ve gotten the best of both worlds. Unfortunately I’m too much of a seafood snob and would prefer to cook it myself any day over a restaurant. That’s what I get for having chefs for parents I guess.

  • You’re lobster looks ah-mazing! I love shellfish and have tried a ton of seafood restaurants in NYC (including Red Lobster but that’s a whole other story). My favorites are Aquagrill in SoHo, Mary’s Fish Camp in the West Village, Ed’s Lobster Bar is SoHo and the Mermaid Inn in the East Village. Aquagrill has an awesome oyster selections, Mary’s Fish Camp and the Mermaid Inn make two of the best lobster rolls I’ve ever tasted, and you can’t go wrong with whole lobster at Ed’s. If you ever need an eating companion let me know. Mmmm I’m craving it now!

  • That place sounds great! Perfect date spot. I love lobster and live in MA so I get most of my seafood from little holes in the wall on Cape Cod. If you’re ever on the Cape, check out Seafood Sams. It’s not fancy, but it’s delicious!

We have some really great seafood restaurants around here….but I’m sure they are nothing compared to the Eastern coast.
